Emily Bronte published 'Wuthering Heights' in 1847, under the pseudonym Ellis Bell. The book's avant-garde themes - especially those of mental cruelty, and passionate uncontrollable desire - shocked staid Victorian tastes, and the work met with mixed reviews and very few sales. Later generations begged to differ, and have found the story of the doomed relationship between the fervently passionate Cathy, and Heathcliffe, her dark, but equally intense lover, utterly irresistible. 'Wuthering Heights' has become one of the most highly acclaimed and deservedly popular novels in the English language.
